Children's Book Illustrating

What is the motivation to become a children's book illustrator? If it is to become rich and famous, certainly the reality of being required to continue in a full time job to keep food on the table even after being published will hit the illustrator rather quickly.

As much as many excellent children's authors are not as well known as writers for adults, children's book illustrators are an even lesser known breed, yet what child's book could do without them?

Some would even argue that in many cases, the work of the illustrator is what really makes a children's book good, and probably many a lacklustre manuscript has been saved by the work of an imaginative and skillfull artist.

Certainly today there is an abundance of aspiring artists for children's literature, and many good ones have still not had their work published. Many publishers and authors feel safe working with artists they know or have worked with before. Still, there is always room for improvement and new and original material will always be required. Sometimes, it is only a matter of perserverance and of working smart, while continuing to hone the artistic skill and talent.

If you are an aspiring children's literature artist, or maybe even have already had work accepted, we hope you will enjoy the Illustration Resources for Children's literature to be of assistance, and perhaps will find some inspiration in those that presently can hang their hat as a children' book illustrator.
