Children's Book Divisions By Age Group
Although there are a number of possible ways to divide the existing types of children's books, the most useful and the most common way is to use divisions
based on the intended reader's age.
- Toddlers/Preschoolers (up to age 3), like books with brightly colored pictures
of objects and short, simple text. Topics are usually very basic, focussing on color,
every-day items, with little or nothing in terms of plot development.
- Nursery School and Kindergarten (3-5 years), prefer books with
lots of picture and brief text about experiences and objects that are
familiar to them. They like rhyme, and stories that deal with fulfilled wishes and dreams, new situations handled , and problems resolved.
- Beginning Readers (6-8 years), like picture books with strong story lines and character development, but with short sentences and simple words. They prefer action and variety, they enjoy learning about the world around them, and can appreicate humor.
- Young Adults (9-12 years), prefer fiction with lots of action and strong characterization. They can become engrossed in specialized topics, and enjoy fantasy and mysteries. Books based on family patterns and interpersonal relationships are also big in this age group.
