Children's Book Awards

  • Caldecott Medal - annual prize awarded "to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children." It was established in 1938 by Frederic G. Melcher, chairman of the board of the R.R. Bowker Publishing Company, and named for the 19th-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is presented at the annual conference of the American Library Association along with the Newbery Medal for children's literature.

  • Newbery Medal - annual award given to the author of the most distinguished American children's book of the previous year. It was established by Frederic G. Melcher and named for John Newbery, the 18th-century English publisher who was among the first to publish books exclusively for children. The first award was given in 1922.

  • The Coretta Scott King Award - established in 1969, with an additional award for illustrators added in 1979, this award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to honor Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination in continuing his work. The award is presented each year to and African American artist and illustrator for an educational and inspirational work published in the previous year.

  • The Edgar Allan Poe Award - annual award from the Mystery Writers of America presented to authors of crime, suspense, mystery or intrigue. Awards are given in various categories including juvenile and young adult fiction. The first 'Edgar' was awarded in 1962, with the winners receiving a ceramic bust of Edgar Allan Poe.

  • Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction Award - an annual award established in 1981 by Newbery award winner Scott O'Dell, to recognize outstanding works of English language historical fiction published by a U.S. Publisher. Winners receive $5000.

  • Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award - The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award was developed to encourage children and young adults to read for personal satisfaction. Books are nominated by children in grades 4-8 who read the books on the list, and vote for their favorites each February. The author of the winning book receives a plaque.

  • The Carnegie Medal - was established in 1937, and is presented annually to an outstanding english language book published first (or concurrently) in the United Kingdom

  • Margaret A. Edwards Award for Outstanding Literature for Young Adults - honors an author for lifetime achievement in writing books for teenagers.
